Although every setup
is different, the following notes apply to my environment that led to a
successful deployment of above-referenced fan controller

Install (3) custom
Device Type Handlers (DTH) for KOF Zigbee Fan Controller and it’s children (fan
and light) before attempting to pair the Hampton Bay controller by connecting to
code repository via Github integration.

Use old “SmartThings
Classic” app (instead of new “Samsung Connect” app) to allow custom device
handlers mentioned above. Remove new “Samsung
Connect” app from all devices to avoid confusion.

Locate SmartThings
Generation 3 hub within 10 feet of the fan controller to pair successfully. Put hub in pairing mode (Add New Device) and
then toggle power to controller at electrical panel breaker ON and OFF 5 to 7
times, with rough count of about 2 seconds ON and 1 second OFF. Leave power ON at last toggle for about 20-30
seconds for controller to appear in the app.
Be mindful naming root controller device during pairing (ie “Bedroom Fan”)
because the children devices will take on this name (ie “Bedroom Fan” Light).

Interference with
Zigbee radio and poor signal range in SmartThings hub can be an issue. Locate SmartThings hub well away from home
(wifi) router. Obtain hard-coded Zigbee
channel of SmartThings hub on “My Hubs” page and reference this to a map of how
these channels overlay the 2.4 GHz home router wifi band. Change channel of home router wifi (choose
channel 1, 6 or 11) so the 2.4 GHz wifi is not stepping on SmartThings hub
Zigbee frequency.

Install SmartThings
outlet between hub and fan controller as necessary to act as a Zigbee repeater. After moving/installing the SmartThings
outlet acting as a Zigbee repeater, unplug SmartThings hub for 15 minutes and
then power back on to force rebuild of Zigbee mesh network.

Set SmartThings hub to
allow “Insecure Rejoin” under Zigbee Utilities and set “Device Health” to OFF.

If fan controller is
not responding, attempt recovery by going into “Bedroom Fan” thing in app,
choosing settings gear, and toggling and saving option to “Delete and re-create
child devices”

Amazon Alexa
Integration

For Amazon Alexa
integration, have Amazon Alexa SmartApp installed under Automation in SmartThings
Classic app and give access to either all or select devices in this SmartApp.

In Alexa app, go to
Home Automation and click “+” to add device.
Scroll down and choose “Other” then “Scan” to find any new devices the SmartThings
app has exposed to the Alexa link.

In Alexa app, choose “All
Devices” under Home Automation and then click on the Parent device (ie “Bedroom
Fan”) and “Disable” it. This will allow
access to the light and fan speeds verbally via Alexa (ie “Alexa, turn ON Bedroom Light”, “Alexa, turn ON Bedroom Fan Med-Hi”). Yes, say “medd-high” phonetically and it should do it. (This fan speed functionality did not work
unless parent device was “Disabled” in Alexa app)

Shown are track plans for Bobot's Model Railroads. Both are way too track-heavy, but at the time I was trying to get maximum track in minimum space and was buying trains like they were going out of style. I have learned a lot, and next time there will be much more landscaping and much less track for realism. Outside dimensions of both are 12' x 12'
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">My project is based off initial work by Steve Spence on his YouTube channel here:

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">scale speed is calculated in O-scale

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">speed can be detected in either direction

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">circuit will not "reset" based solely on time while a train is still triggering one or both sensors

Note that I am using one 47-ohm resistor (R1) across the Vout and Adj pins on my LM317T voltage regulator so it acts as a "current" regulator. This is for my LED strip which has 150 ohm resistors built in to each group of LEDs and a total of 21 LEDs. Your mileage may vary (ie you may need to adjust the resistor R1 for your circuit to get the desired brightness).

These are the pinouts for the LM317T Voltage Regulator I used in a TO-220 package. Take careful note of the pinouts for your voltage regulator as it may be different. Also assure the ADJ pin of the voltage regulator goes to DC + of your LED strip, not the Vout.
The road in town came to an end at the tracks in front of the left-most store. I have now extended the road out of town over 3 tracks to the edge of the layout.
The yard maintenance area was now inaccessible to vehicular traffic, so I created access ramps to allow entry from the main road to the maintenance areas and yard tower.
Last year I bought an MTH Ellicott Mills dry goods transfer warehouse and located it on the layout in a nice big spot between the rail lines and the highway. I scenicked the lots and roads around it but couldn't decide how to create a lot for such a relatively large space.

Finally I decided I would first pour concrete pads for the trucks to back up on, and then make asphalt for the rest of the lot.

I started by marking the corners of the warehouse and then drew lines where I wanted the concrete lots to be.

I found some stuff at Scenic Express called Scale Concrete so I thought I'd give it a shot. Here are the tools you may need to do the concrete.

I used Woodland Scenics paving tape to outline the lots, and then masked off the areas around it with masking tape.

I then scooped a bunch of the Scale Concrete product into the masked area and spent a while with various tools spreading and smoothing it. Wetting your tools occasionally can help smooth the concrete, however it was difficult to get a really smooth surface over such a large area. It was not the most fun experience I've had, but came out ok.

About an hour after I poured I cut around the edge with an X-actoI knife and pulled up the masking tape. I came back after 24 hours and tried to sand it, and it was still damp! This stuff took at least 48 hours to dry but it was around 60 degrees in my basement so I'm sure that had an affect on it. I saw some flaws in it and figured that was like real life and let it go.

I then masked off the concrete pads and poured the asphalt lots around them using Woodland Scenics Smooth-It. You gotta work fast with Smooth-It. Once it starts to set up, it gets hard like a rock real fast and your tools get all messy. Smooth-It worked best when I kept it on the runny side.

After it dried, I again masked off the concrete and painted the white Smooth-It with Woodland Scenics Asphalt paint. In retrospect, it probably needed another coat but it’s a little late now.

I used a combination of Super Turf, Heki wildgrasses, dirt, fine turf, and small broken pieces of Super Trees.

What to do? Build a picnic table for outside your ice cream shop, of course.

You can buy a 1.5" O-Scale picnic table online for $12, but why, I thought. I took some thin sheets of balsa wood and a straight edge and started cutting with an X-acto knife. No plan, no measurements...I just eye-balled it. I didn't even look at a picture, I just made it up as I went. I used Crazy Glue to glue it together and hit it with some wood stain. It took less than 30 minutes in all. It's a little lop-sided but whatever...not bad for not measuring anything.Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221754833726154034.post-5248780635338326822012-02-20T17:42:00.000-05:002013-04-13T10:46:06.868-04:00Check out Bobot's Trains YouTube Channel
I wanted to place them so at they lighted the yard and industrial areas as best they could without flooding the town and Main Street with extra light.

These shots were taken only by the lights on the layout. They look ok on my monitor but may look a little dark on yours if it is not correctly calibrated.

At one end, there was an awkward space near the entrance to the yard where another full size building would not fit. Also, Main Street came to a dead end and looked silly. I thought for a long time on what to do with it.

In this photo the space is to the left of Eatie Gormet's where the traffic lights are laying.

I found one of the new Woodland Scenics pre-made structures that was tall and skinny, and I was happy to find it just barely fit when I got home. (You have to take into account a long freight car or engine overhanging the track to the inside when going into the yard, so the edge of the building as shown is about the closest it could get to the track.) I first created a base out of foam core board which also brought the street up to level.

I added another foam board layer for the curb offset and carried it around the side for the dumpster and crate. I painted it up and glued it down, and landscape the rough edges with stone and weeds.
At the end of Main Street, I had to build up a piece of foam board on an incline to make a railroad crossing. I filled the edges with Woodland Scenics foam putty (great stuff!) and painted the roads. I installed the white lines using 1/8" car pinstriping, but came back the next day to find it peeling up. I've used this method before, so I'm not sure if it's losing it's tack or if it was too cold in the basement to apply this. I went over it with a heat gun and will see if that helps in the long term.
This is a work in progress as I have to create the grade crossing and continue the road over to the edge of the layout. Also I would like to add a small flower garden or bushes in the dead space between the brick pavers and the "ramp".Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221754833726154034.post-46761186181761097832012-02-15T21:47:00.000-05:002012-06-04T00:27:16.421-04:00Mobile Home dude can now park!Last year I created a mobile home scene, but never finished it. Well now the dude who lives there has a road to get to his home and a lot to park in. Finally! He's been parking along Main Street and walking across the grass in his yard for over a year. I put up a temporary mountain back drop to take this photo. The photos came out really neat.
It was all dusty and the handrails were bent, but I've been looking for a command switcher and thought how bad could it be for $99?

Since this was a 2003 engine, I installed a BCR battery replacement right away. I had to drop the circuit board inside (and a set of trucks in the process) to get to the battery compartment, so while I was in there I lubed the worm gears and lubed everything up. I think it only had a couple hundred scale miles on it. I cleaned up the shell and set up all the electronics.

It's a great runner, running consistently without jitter at 1 smph when pulling a consist! One thing it doesn't do well is sound - the speaker is small and gets easily overpowered and distorted. Keeping the volume low is the key, and for yard work it should be nice. One other thing I noticed is since it is short in length, it seemed to have trouble going over some of my switches at slow speed.

For $99, it was a good buy and cleaned up nice.
As reported in my previous blog post, I had an initial problem with the one motor's flywheel scraping the inside of the shell. I showed how I resolved this problem in a video in that blog post and since then this has been a decent engine. Sounds and sound quality is great and it runs smooth at slow speeds. I got a tremendous price on this which is one reason I bought it. Well that and I like Burlington Northern's colors.
After carefully unpacking and doing an initial oil, lube, and smoke fluid, the first run allowed me to enjoy a scraping sound coming from the rear motor/truck area. Given my recent history with poor build quality on Lionel high-end engines, I was actually expecting something like this. Sorry about the sloppy video quality, but I never set out to make a video on this. I had my iPhone with me and thought I'd capture some of the steps as I went along and when I was able to fix it, I thought it would be useful to someone in a similar situation.

In the end, simply re-seating the gear collar into the sprocket and slightly bending the screw tabs on the motor mount towards the frame allowed the motor to be screwed tightly to the frame and solved the problem.

I could hear the new engine's insides "click" when I applied power to the track, and there were no lights or sounds so I was satisfied the engine heard the DCS watchdog signal on the track. However every time I attempted to add the new engine to the DCS roster, it would say "CHECK TRACK" and then "ENGINE ERROR".

A search on the O-Gauge forum (http://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com) led me to the answer in a section of Barry Broskowitz's DCS bible entitled "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition". There is a bug in the DCS software (at least versions 4.1 and 4.2) where you sometimes cannot add a new PS2 engine when a current lashup exists in your roster having the same address that it wants to use to add the new engine.

To solve my problem, I simply edited my lashup engine settings and changed the address of the lashup to a different number. I was immediately able to add the new engine and all was well.Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221754833726154034.post-53395799453714766222011-12-08T20:04:00.000-05:002012-06-04T00:34:30.876-04:00Fixing Lionel TMCC ground plane issue without ruining layout cosmeticsInstalled ground cover in the yard area and telephone poles carrying a wire to solve the Lionel TMCC ground plane issue where engines to not respond and lights blink.

My excitement of receiving my third replacement BNSF ES44AC from Lionel quickly changed to disappointment and disgust. Upon opening the box, I could tell by the packaging that it had been previously opened by someone else, just like the last defective replacement they sent me. In both cases, the packs of silica gel were wedged in so the loco shifted in shipping and ripped the small packets open allowing little silica beads to be all over the inside of the foam and box. Also, all 3 locomotives had broken steps on the pilots needing glued back on. I know how to carefully open and handle these by now, and I am very cautious to see how they come "out of the box". They can't even be packaged and shipped without damage.

In any case, everything seemed to work and I thought this saga was finally over. Then, as I started playing with the idle and power save sounds and volume, I realized this banshee squeal through the sound system and speaker that I've only heard before on a Radio Shack 100-in-1 Electronic Kit Project.

I'm done with this nonsense. A bad Lionel Genset Switcher and (3) bad Lionel ES44AC Hybrids in a row is more than enough for me to see there are major problems here. Each of the problem locos has had a list of 5 or more things wrong with it, except this last one which only really had 3 problems. I've tried to be patient, but for now I need to see what can be done to remedy this situation…hopefully in the form of a refund.
Initial inspection revealed 3 loose or broken pilot steps which I was able to glue back on. The cab windows had small scratches and fingerprints, and overall the loco didn't look "brand new in the box." Further investigation revealed a covered shipping label where it went to some other guy's residence in Michigan in January 2011.

After an initial lube and oil of the gearing, I gave it a test run. Since my Legacy remote system is still at Lionel for repairs, I had to use my older TMCC remote. The engine didn't respond consistently to commands, lurched when running, and exhibited the infamous "smoking coupler" as seen in this video:

Feature reset commands didn't help the situation with the antenna or signal issue. The chain detail on the trucks had excessive slack, and the contact circuit board under the rear hatch had a stripped screw. Lastly, several contacts, circuit boards, and solder points had the appearance of corrosion of some sort. Ultimately, it went back to Lionel for the 2nd time after spending a full 11 hours in the house.

I am now waiting for a 3rd replacement from Chesterfield, MI, and of course today my supposedly repaired Legacy remote showed up…and I have no Legacy engines to run with it.Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221754833726154034.post-12147966052515071222011-08-01T20:45:00.000-04:002012-06-04T00:41:28.444-04:00BNSF ES44AC loco and Legacy Remote gets returned to Lionel for RepairsI decided there were too many issues with the BNSF ES44AC Lemon, er, uh, Loco so I returned it to Lionel for a repair. They agreed that there were too many separate issues and are sending me a replacement. I pushed for a replacement and appreciate Lionel's concern and willingness to try to satisfy me.

Also my Legacy remote has never fully charged so it was returned for repair as well. Supposedly a known issue that requires some hardware upgrades/mods.

Not much going on with trains during the summer so good time for me and Lionel service.Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221754833726154034.post-14723330826542235982011-07-04T12:10:00.000-04:002012-06-04T00:41:50.995-04:00Giving up on Lionel? In previous posts I have documented my experience with opening up the Lionel Legacy BNSF ES44AC and related build quality and wiring issues inside.

After re-assembling from the last repair, the engine ran OK for a few short sessions and then the rear coupler would no longer fire. I took it apart and found a broken wire going to the rear coil coupler. I was able to manipulate the coupler free from the pilot, unwind the tape, re-solder the wire and put it all back together. During this process I found ALL the wires going to the coil couplers were installed too tightly in the guide slots in the pilot, not allowing the couplers to sway from side to side without putting too much pressure on the wires and eventually tearing them from the coupler. Simply removing these wires from the slots they were in to add slack proved to be more difficult than first thought, resulting in torn wire insulation that needed repaired.

After fixing all this up and reinstalling the shell, the ground lights did not work. I opened it up again to find one of the the tiny wires going to the ground lights had broken off…re-soldering this was not fun. Now after reinstalling the shell the front pilot did not swing smoothly. I had to monkey with the tightness of the screws holding the shell on.

I’ve only had this for three months but I am reluctant to return for repair because I hear many stories of stuff coming back from Lionel repair with other problems. And truthfully I see why this happens; things inside are so fragile that every time you remove and reinstall the shell to make a repair you break something else. Furthermore, my 3-month old Legacy remote never fully charges and I understand I need to return that for service. Also I still continue to have intermittent ground plane problems with Legacy/TMCC which makes consistent reliable running of command Lionel products on my layout nearly impossible. I love the heft, detail, and sounds of the ES44AC…otherwise everything that says Lionel on it would be sold right now.

And to add insult to injury, my MTH’s just keep on going. The only problems I ever had with DCS was electrical interference from Lionel engines. Now I run TMCC and DCS on electrically separate mains and DCS is flawless. All this without any modification to my current layout wiring or magic light bulbs.

Is it time to just give up on Lionel completely until they take a few years to get their act straightened out?Bobothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11754749314330691012noreply@blogger.com
